FIBA Africa Championship 1972

The basketball Africa championship in 1972, the sixth basketball Africa Championship, took place between December 25, 1971 and January 2, 1972 held in Dakar, Senegal, which hosted the championship for the first time. Winner was the national team of Senegal that could defeat the defending champion United Arab Republic in the final and thus win the title for the second time. For the first time took teams from Cameroon, Madagascar, Togo and Nigeria in the tournament. Thus, a record number of twelve teams participated in the tournament.

Mode

In the preliminary round was divided into two groups (group A and B), played for six teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team exactly five games ( a total of 30 games have been completed ) completed. Pro victory, there were two points for a defeat at least one point. The first and second placed a group moved into the semi-finals, with the winners competed against the runners-up of the respective other group. The third place winners of both groups played for fifth place, the fourth-placed at number seven, the fifth-placed to ninth and the last player to rank eleven.
