2011 FIBA Africa Championship

The basketball Africa Cup 2011 (in short: Afrobasket 2011) is the 26th edition of this tournament and was held from 17 to 28 August 2011 in the Madagascan capital Antananarivo instead. All matches were played in the gymnasium of the Université d' Antananarivo. The winner of the tournament qualified directly for the Olympic basketball tournament in 2012, the other two medalists had a chance to qualify via the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in 2012 for the Olympic Games.

Originally, the Ivorian capital Abidjan was scheduled to host the finals. After the political unrest in the Ivory Coast end of April 2011 it was decided to leave the final round held in Madagascar on spare location. The final round was finally discharged at the next African Cup of Nations 2013 in Abidjan.

After six consecutive tournament victories Angola lost the final against Tunisia, with the " MVP " Salah Mejri won his first title and the first time qualified for the Olympics after they had a year earlier, the first time qualified for the World Championships. While Angola also a year later did not reach the qualification for the Olympic Games, to bronze medalist Nigeria, which struck the originally intended host Ivory Coast in the " small final " could qualify later for the Olympic basketball tournament.

Mode

At the tournament a preliminary round in four groups was held to four teams as a round-robin tournament. The rankings in the qualifying groups yielded a set list for the final knockout rounds, in the first knockout round, the four group best played as the first knockout round first against one of four group last and the four runners-up against one of the four third group. According to the preliminary round results, a quotient was formed after the loser of the first knockout round fought out another placement match. The losers of the quarter-finals played in a placement round out the ranks Five to Eight. The losers of the semi-finals played in the " small final " for the bronze medal and a remaining launch site for the Olympic qualifying tournament. The winners of the semifinal played for the gold medal and the direct starting place for the Olympic basketball tournament, with the final losers on the pre-Olympic tournament had another opportunity qualification.
