Krautergersheim is a commune with 1732 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Pays de Sainte -Odile.

History

The municipal area of Krautergersheim were traces of settlement from the Hallstatt period (1200-475 BC), from the Gallo -Roman period (52 BC to the 5th century ), and from the subsequent Merovingian period (5th - 8th century) found.

Documents confirm that the monasteries Murbach ( 735 ), Fulda ( 778 ) and Baumgarten ( 1181 ) and the Convention Mont Sainte-Odile (1050 ) had possessions in Krautergersheim.

From the 14th century to the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ), the place was owned by several noble families. The middle line of the Barons of Berckheim became extinct in the male line on 12 November 1787 the grandson of its founder, Samuel Francis, a French colonel, Stettmeister at Strasbourg, and rector of the university there. The Berckheims possessed there a 1815 previous castle, which later by Bernard -Frédéric de Turckheim ( 1752-1831 ), the temporary mayor of Strasbourg and husband of Lili Beautiful Man ( 1758-1817 ), the wealthy banker's daughter from Frankfurt am Main, was purchased. The so-called central chapel, also called Chapelle de Turkheim, represents the remains of the former property dar. Here is the tomb of the two. The building of the Central Chapel is privately owned by the de Turkheim de Dachstein family.

In 1587 the place was looted and set on fire during the Wars of Religion ( 1562-1598 ) of overhauling mercenaries. In the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) was sacked twice, first by Peter Ernst II of Mansfeld's troops, then by Swedish troops.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the word " herb" placed at the beginning of the name, as there is a village of the same name " Ergersheim " only about 10 kilometers north of Krautergersheim. The renaming of the place testified, moreover, that the production of sauerkraut and the cultivation of white cabbage have a long tradition in the community.

Culture

Krautergersheim calls itself "the capital of sauerkraut " and regularly commits " The feast of sauerkraut " ( Fête de la choucroute ).
