MuÄŸla Province

The Turkish Muğla Province [ mu ː la ] is located in the extreme southwest of Asia Minor. It represents the heartland of ancient Caria and has a population of about 840,000 people, of whom about 62,000 live in the eponymous provincial capital of Muğla.

The Muğla province is bordered on the north by the province of Aydın, on the northeast by Denizli and Burdur and Antalya to the east. It forms a strip about 50 x 250 km, compared with the coast of Rhodes, where it bends with three less protruding peninsulas in a strip of the Aegean ( Ege Denizi ) to the eastern Mediterranean.

Economically, the region of the most important tourism, especially on the Bodrum peninsula. Of importance are also the carpet manufactories, some ancient sites and museums and the local bazaars.

Good transport connections are - despite the predominant cliff - given by vessel traffic, and from the north through the streets of İzmir and Aydın. Airports with international connections are available in Dalaman and Bodrum.

At the heavily indented coastline lie south of the city of Muğla, among other things, the ancient ruined cities Kerme, Knidos, Telmessus (Fethiye ) and Caunos. Also known are some cemeteries with the typical high Caria built sarcophagi.
