Passau (district)

The district of Passau is located in the Bavarian administrative district of Lower Bavaria. Neighboring counties are in the northern district of Freyung -Grafenau, in the eastern district of Rohrbach and to the south the districts Schärding, Ried and Braunau am Inn, which belong to the Austrian state of Upper Austria, in the west, the district Rottal -Inn and the northwest of the district of Deggendorf. Geography

By the district flows from northwest to southeast of the Danube. To the east of the circle this the border with Austria (Upper Austria ) forms. History

The area of present-day district of Passau belonged before 1800 mainly for high pin Passau and came to Bavaria in 1806. Then the district courts of Passau and Wegscheid were built. Coat of arms

Traffic

The district of Passau before the 1972 local government reorganization

The Altlandkreis Passau was divided into 39 municipalities. Geographically, he cupped, as now, the district-free city of Passau, in the even then the district administration had its headquarters. Through the town of Passau and the county Vilshofen the old county area was divided into a smaller portion south of the Danube to the Neuburg Forest and a larger portion north of the Danube in the Bavarian Forest. Coat of arms

The old county coat of arms was approved in 1968. The Bavarian lozenges in the upper part symbolized the membership in Bavaria. The Passau wolf on the heraldic right side was for the city of Passau and accessories, especially the northern parts of the county, the old Bishopric of Passau. The three wave beam on the heraldic left standing for the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz that run through the area of the old county.

Communities before 1972

Already before 1972 there were several changes in the community structure of the district. 1855, the parish of St. Nikola was divided. The eastern part came in 1870 to the city of Passau, the western part remained under the name Haidenhof an independent municipality until 1909 and then was also incorporated to Passau. In 1922 the town was annexed to the municipality Ries neck. In 1923 the town was incorporated Beiderwies to Passau and has since been part of the district Innstadt.
