Strohn

Strohn is a municipality in the volcanic Eifel region of Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Daun.

Geography

Geographical location

Strohn lies in the volcanic Eifel, south of Gillespie Field and Pulvermaars, the Alfbach fliest by Strohn.

Districts

The municipality Strohn includes the hamlets and residential places Altheck, beech, thorn hedge, Mr. Büsch, Sprink, Tannenhof and Trautzberg.

Volcanism

The surroundings of the town is marked by volcanism of the Eifel. Particularly noteworthy are the Strohner fairy tale, a little Maar, which is nearing the final silting. It was created about 8100 years ago in a lateral eruption of Roman Mountain, a cinder volcano. Together with the Pulvermaar and the Romans mountain it forms a nature reserve (provided in 1984 under protection).

In the village itself there is a lava bomb, one shaped by volcanic activity basalt sphere. It has a diameter of about five meters and a weight of about 120 tons. They did not originate from a unique ejection but by repeatedly throwing up from the back and slipping into the crater, where she recorded lava and pieces of slag remained until she stuck in the crater rim and finally cooled. They broke up in 1969 with quarry blasting out of the volcanic cone and was promoted in the winter 1980/81 by means of an iron plate over the solid blanket of snow with a bulldozer in the town center.

History

Strohn is a very old place. In 1193 the place under the name " Struna " is first mentioned, when Emperor Henry VI. the abbot of Absalon Springiersbach the possession of lands and meadows in Strohn confirmed. In Strohn high court was held.

Policy

Parish council

The local council in Strohn consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman. In the previous election period from 2004 to 2009 the council consisted of eight council members.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms description reads: "shield, split by intervening silver tip, is a red scale, the front of a green langued truncated golden lion's head, back in Green assigned a millstone silver with three golden ears ".

The lion was badge of the abbots of the monastery Springiersbach, the scale indicates venue clauses. Millstone and ear point to the importance of agriculture and Strohner mills, one of which still exists today.

Tourism

The Experience Museum Volcano House has local significance. There are seven marked trails with a total length of 60 km found. Similarly, there are many signposted Nordic walking trails around Strohn. In addition to the volcanic home in Strohn is the end of September 2007, the new volcano adventure trail, with a tour of about 4.5 km, in a scenic valley, who had been " Strohner Switzerland " completed.
