Drees

Drees is a municipality in the volcanic Eifel region of Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Kelberg.

Geography

The place is located in the Eifel. It is surrounded by small villages Balkhausen and Nürburg in the West, Meuspath the northwest, Doettingen in the north, Herresbach, Baar and Central Baar in the Northeast, Lower Baar in the east, Nitz in the southeast, Kirsbach in the south and Welcherath in the southwest. History

Drees was first mentioned in 1222 under the name " Dreyse ". The word comes from the Celtic word for wellspring. This is akin to the old Germanic word " Thrais " for jets, bubbling or swirling. The eponymous sprudelne by volcanic activity of mineral water source no longer exists.

In 1794, French revolutionary troops had occupied the left bank of the Rhine. Under the French administration Drees belonged from 1798 to 1814 for Canton Adenau in the Rhine- Moselle department.
