Schalkenmehren

Schalkenmehren is a municipality in the district of volcanic Eifel region of Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Daun. Schalkenmehren is a nationally recognized resort.

Geography

The community Schalkenmehren lies in the volcanic Eifel 4 kilometers (direct distance ) south-southeast of Daun Nordostfuß at the Hoher List. Several volcanic lakes, such as the Schalke Maar, the wine Maar and the Gemündener Maar, are in the district.

The Schalke Maar is a popular swimming lake, where you can also windsurfing.

To Schalkenmehren includes the residential places Altburg, train station, Barninerhof, Bintener yard, Former Flakhaus, Observatorium Hoher List and Schalkenmehrener mill.

History

The first record of the village was in an issued for the monastery Himmerod deed on 25 November 1287.

In 1920, the young teacher Anna Droste- Lehnert came into the village in the Eifel. She noticed that the Eifel farmers were very poor, and that they could weave beautiful fabrics, the so-called " Maartuch ". With friends from migrant bird movement they convinced people to start with her a cooperative. 1926 19 Schalkenmehrener citizens connected to home weaving cooperative Schalkenmehren eG together. The farmers wove the farmers tomized, and the cooperative marketed the products. Mrs. Droste- Lehnert also designed new patterns for the weavers. Active citizens of the village Schalkenmehren later founded the home weaving Museum Schalkenmehren, in which the history of home weaving cooperative is shown, and operate it voluntarily.

Economy and infrastructure

Schalkenmehren has a small airfield for motor and sail planes, an observatory, which belongs to the University of Bonn, and the home weaving Museum Schalkenmehren.

With the founding Date November 11, 1868, the Hotel Schneider am Maar is the most traditional restaurant, which is now run by the sixth generation of the family.

The addiction clinic in the Altburg at Schalkenmehren since 1991 works with a success rate of up to 50 %.

Traffic

On December 1, 1909 Schalkenmehren has been connected with the opening of the Maare-Mosel -Bahn to the rail network. Since May 29, 1988 Schalkenmehren is no longer accessible by train. On the former railway line now runs the Maare -Moselle bicycle route.
