Birgel

Birgel is a municipality in the volcanic Eifel region of Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Upper Kyll whose administrative headquarters is in Juenkerath.

Geography

Geographical location

The place is located in the natural park Eifel on the upper Kyll. Birgel is halfway between Trier and Cologne. It is accessed via the B 421 and the rail route Cologne - Trier ( station Lissendorf ).

To Birgel includes the residential places Bielenhof, home Mueller, house Papillon, Tannenhof and Hubertushof.

Geology

The place belongs to the natural area Kalkeifel and lies on the southern edge of the Dollendorfer Kalkmulde. The altitude ranges from 400 m above sea level. NHN at the Kyll at Crumpsmühle to about 526 m above sea level. NHN on Hirzberg.

History

The first written mention of Birgel can be found in the comments of the Prüm land register from the year 1222. In 1457 acquired Gerhard von Loen, Count of Blankenheim half a yard in Birgel. The Lords of Mirbachstrasse had in place ownership, as they called themselves in a document from the 16th century as "masters of Birgel ". In the 16th century Birgel fell into the realm of the Counts of Gerolstein. The Elector of Trier had a Lehenshof in place. The Kurtrierische bailiff Daun received in the 16th century pensions from Birgel. However, dominant in the place were the Counts of Manderscheid - Blankenheim - Gerolstein. On the occasion of a comparison in 1547 was determined that Birgel belonged to the rule Gerolstein.

In the so-called French period Birgel belonged from 1798 to 1814 for Canton Lissendorf in Saarland Department. Under the subsequent Prussian administration Birgel was assigned ( Region of Trier ) of the mayoralty Lissendorf in the Kreis Daun.

Coat of arms

The blazon reads: " Green over Silver Three mountain a silver stag's head in their sights high with silver cross between the antlers ."

The name goes back to an Old High German term for a small mountain. The Three mountain in the arms of the local church is thus a canting arms for Birgel. The Silver Stag Head with Cross is the attribute of St. Hubert, the chapel is consecrated in Birgel.
