Tom Watson (golfer)
Thomas Sturges Watson ( born September 4, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American professional golfer. With its eight major tournament victories, of which five times the British Open, he is one of the most successful players of all time.
Career
Watson's golf career began in 1971 after he had made at Stanford University with a degree in psychology. With the 1974 season then began his successful time on the PGA Tour, which lasted until 1984. From the late 1980s, Watson was able to putt because of continuing problems no longer keep his brilliant form. About 10 years later, however, at the advanced age of 47 or 49 years, he still won a tournament against each throughout much younger competition.
When the Ryder Cup was Tom Watson four times ( 3 wins, 1 draw) to the team of United States. In 1993 he was captain of the winning team.
Since 1999, Watson is allowed to play with the seniors on the Champions Tour, where it has so far won five major titles.
Unforgettable stay its high class duel with Jack Nicklaus at the 1977 Open Championship and the U.S. Open in 1982. Both tournaments he could then respectively at the last moment to decide for themselves. A very emotional day was at the U.S. Open in 2003, when Watson, accompanied by his long-time caddy Bruce Edwards a sensational opening round of 65 strokes succeeded and everyone knew that it would be the departure of Edwards terminally ill with ALS. The Caddy died the following year at the age of 49
On 19 July 2009, when almost 60 years, led Watson at the Open Championship a hole before the end by one shot. However, he postponed the game-winning putt on the final hole and lost in the subsequent play-off against his 24 years younger countryman Stewart Cink.
Tom Watson currently lives with his wife, two children and three stepchildren in Stillwell, Kansas.
In the Ryder Cup in 2014, he will serve as captain of the U.S. selection.
