Geography

Location

The district of Uecker- Randow had its name from the two biggest waters of the circular area, the rivers Uecker Randow and. In the north of the county a coastline along the Szczecin Lagoon runs. This line forms on the border with the Republic of Poland to the Bay of Neuwarper lake. The northern half of the district is occupied by the Ueckermünder heath, wooded lowlands. In the West, the county share of the Endmoränenzug Brohm Mountains. Here also lies the 133 m above sea level. NN highest elevation ( Ziegler mountain). The southern part of the district is located east and west of the Randow in a hilly area and adjacent to the countryside area of northern Brandenburg Uckermark. The only means the center of the circle was Pasewalk, where Ueckermuende in part fulfilled middle center functions. Sub-centers are Eggesin, Torgelow, Strasburg and Löcknitz. Rural central places are Penkun and Ferdinandshof.

Landscape shape

The animal and plant life in the district is rich in biotypes, which can be found partly in tight spaces, but also scattered widely. In the south and south-west a variety of lakes, bogs and kettle holes are incorporated into the soft undulating loamy Grundmoränenplatten. Due to the good soils primarily agriculture in these areas operated and the proportion of forest here is very low. Along the Randowtals you meet a unique for Germany steppe flora, which is mainly characterized by continental dry grasslands. The north of the county is mainly characterized by a high forest cover, which is also due to the poorer soil properties. Along the Haffküste as well as in many other parts of the circle extend so typical of the landscape avenues. Through the decades of use on parts of the Ueckermünder Heath as a military training area of the NVA and later the armed forces, valuable dwarf shrub heaths and Magerrasen have developed in these areas. At the margins of wildlife sanctuaries and refuges have been created, for example for eagle. Between the Ueckermünder moors and the mountains Brohm is the Friedländer Große Wiese, they once constituted the most extensive Kalkflachmoor northern Germany it proceeded a large-scale melioration in the 1960s by the former plant and animal world, however, not much left. Of particular importance are the meadows today as a resting and feeding area for approximately 100 breeding bird, and again 80 migratory bird species. The Brohm Mountains are characterized by extensive beech and mixed forests. In the valleys and lowering the hilly forest Endmoränenzugs many kettle holes and Moore are embedded. They provide the habitat for the black stork, lesser spotted eagle, cranes and deer. On the edge of the mountains Brohm is the Galenbecker lake with sanctuaries for endangered in Central Europe animal and plant species.

Since 2005, the natural area is protected by the Nature Park at the Szczecin Lagoon.
