Raon-aux-Bois

Raon -aux -Bois is a commune with 1233 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, in the canton of Remiremont and the Local Government Association, La Voge vers les Rives de la Moselle.

Geography

The 24 km ² large municipality of Raon -aux -Bois is located in the eastern corner of the plateau Voge, about 18 kilometers south of the city of Epinal and eight kilometers northwest of Remiremont. The Niche flows through on its way to the Mosel the municipal area from south to north and takes on some streams that form the valleys such as the Nichetal even the settlements and roads. With 591 meters above sea level in the east of the municipality area, the highest point is reached.

Forests cover half of the municipal area, particularly in the east and south. The agricultural areas are limited to about 200 ha in the north- west, and some clearings in the southwest.

While Raon -aux -Bois grew up around the church of a core, the district of La Racine has a very loosened settlement character. In addition to the long-drawn district Raon Basse also includes the hamlet of La Chaoteuse and Le Pransieux to Raon -aux -Bois.

Neighboring communities of Raon -aux -Bois are Arches in the north, Pouxeux in the Northeast, Saint- Nabord the east and south, Bellefontaine and Xertigny in the southwest and Hadol in the west and northwest.

History

Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the area around Raon -aux -Bois was repopulated from Bellefontaine out after probably over 100 years lay desolate.

The individual hamlets in today's municipal area belonged partly to the chapter in Remiremont, for Ban of Arches, and to Dommartin. The at the time of the French Revolution newly created municipality of Raon -aux -Bois was from 1790 to 1801 part of the canton of Éloyes.

In the nineteenth century, industrialization also held in this previously living of forest and grazing area catchment. The number of inhabitants at the time was about 2000. Until the 1950s, a spinning mill and a starch factory in Raon -aux -Bois were established.

Since 1962, the population of Raon -aux -Bois has doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

In Raon -aux -Bois some farms and small craft and service companies are located. The timber industry has a very long tradition in the town. Thus, a company has specialized in the wooden blank for modern log cabins. Many residents commute to the nearby industrial areas of the Mosel valley.

The community is a primary school and nursery location and has a post and a bank branch.

About the Department Straße 34 Raon -aux -Bois is connected to Hadol and Remiremont. More roads lead to Arches on the Moselle and to Belle Fontaine.

With Julien Absalon and Estelle Vuillemin, the community has already produced two world-class mountain bikers.
