Sapois (Vosges)

Sapois is a commune with 647 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, in the canton of Saulxures -sur -Moselotte and community association VALLONS you bouchot et du Rupt.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Vosges Sapois, between the towns Remiremont and Gerardmer, seen large-scale between Epinal and Mulhouse, in the southeast of Lorraine.

The almost 17 km ² comprehensive municipality of Sapois includes the catchment area of Menaurupt, a tributary of the bouchot which drains via the Moselotte the Moselle. This includes a glacier -formed valley of Menaurupt, the high valley of the mountain stream Ruisseau de Fouchon and flung to the north and south shares in the mountains on both sides of Menaurupt. In the south, a six- kilometer long, steep, towering, but only 500 to 1000 m wide ridge limits the community area from the valley of bouchot, the Northeast is achieved with 1005 meters above sea level, the highest point of the municipality. Near the Menaurupt source the transition over the saddle Col de Sapois ( 835 m) to the valley of the Ruisseau du phenylene, which continues to the Lake Gerardmer.

Two-thirds of the community are covered with forests, the largest contiguous forest is the Forêt de l' Urson in the Northeast.

The Menaurupttal is characterized by a very loosened development. Only in the area of the core location and the 600 -meter-high hamlet Menaurupt the population density is slightly higher. For climatic reasons, there is no significant agriculture in the valley, however, as instead of meadows and pastures.

In addition to the district Menaurupt also Le Haut du Tôt belongs to the community, built a 800 meter high altitude hamlet of 1832 's highest church of the Vosges.

Neighboring communities of Rochesson are La Bresse in the north, Gerardmer in the Northeast, Rochesson in the east, the south and Gerbamont Vagney in the West.

History

The area between Gerardmer and Vagney was settled slowly clearing from the 7th century. It played like the entire Vosges space monks and monasteries founded a central role. Sapois was part of the large-scale Ban de Vagney, which also includes the now autonomous communities Vagney, Gerbamont, Basse -sur -le- Rupt, Saint- Amé and Saulxures included. The Ban de Vagney ever been placed under the dukes of Lorraine and the chapter of Remiremont half.

The community Sapois arose from a lower and upper village ( le Haut - Sapois, le Bas- Sapois ), which together grew gradually.

1840 was the mayor's building with school in Sapois ( Mairie - école ). In 1861 a school was opened in the district Menaurupt, six years later at altitude in Le Haut du Tôt. In the latter, the school system in 1990 has been set. Le Haut du Tôt 1944 was the scene of fierce fighting for the liberation of the town of Gerardmer.

In the nucleus Sapois and throughout Menaurupttal there is no church. For the pastoral care of the church in the neighboring Vagney is responsible.

Demographics

After an increase, which goes back to an increased building activity in the 1970s and 1980s, the population of Sapois remained almost constant.

Economy and infrastructure

In Sapois smaller craft trade and construction companies are located. Some of the residents commute to the nearby industrial towns. In recent years, the tourism offerings have been expanded in Sapois. In the district of Le Haut du Tôt there is a ski lift.
