1978–79 Soviet League season
The 1978/79 season the Wysschaja League was the 33rd season of the highest Soviet Hockey League. The Soviet league title secured for a total of 22 times CSKA Moscow, while Ufa Salavat Yulaev relegation to the second division.
Mode
The twelve teams in the league played Wysschaja in a common main round four times against any opponent, bringing the total number of games per team was 44. The point- best team became champion, while the table last descent directly to the second division. The teams ranked ten and eleven had to play in the relegation to the Second and Third of the second division. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

In the relegation to the SKA Leningrad and Sverdlovsk Awtomobilist were able to secure the league, while crystal Saratov Sibir Novosibirsk and in the second division, the Perwaja league remained.
