Operating length

As of 1 January 2010 there are in Austria 1719 km motorways and 466 km expressways, of which have about 288 km Motorway cross section. In addition, there are approximately 56 km of motorways and 226 km of expressways under construction or in planning.

Tunnels

Of the 182 tunnels with a total of 340.895 km tunnel tubes have 174 km on two tubes. As an effective way of increasing traffic safety plurality of second tunnels are currently being implemented. By 2010, approximately 842 million euros were invested in the improvement of the safety equipment and the expansion of the tunnel. As of January 1, 2010, there were more 117.572 km tunnels under construction or in planning.

Numbering

According to the Federal Road Act, the requirements of a federal highway A ( highway) and a Federal Road S ( expressway ) are equal. Highways and expressways have next to the numbering name labels with a regional (eg the Inn Valley motorway and Semmeringschnellstraße ), which will be announced in addition to the respective road numbers for traffic announcements. On the road signs, these names do not find, however, they are generally known.

The numbering of the highway exits is analogous to the chainage, exit number 72 is thus not the 72th exit, but is located at km 72 of the road concerned. Intersection points between several highways and freeways are called nodes, with a distinction in Austria not between the motorway junction, the motorway junction or motorway junction.

Toll

In Austria, since 1997 on all motorways and expressways toll charges.

An exception is the not yet four-lane section of the expressway Stockerauer (S5 ) between Grafenwörth and Krems on the Danube. In any case, the toll or toll sticker (see photo at right ) announced by a corresponding sign directly at the driveways to the motorway or expressway.

Often the section of the A12 between the Inn Valley motorway border crossing Kiefersfelden and exit Kufstein Süd is described as toll-free. But it is a toll road, although compliance with the toll sticker was not controlled until November 30, 2013.

Tolling to 3.5 t

For motorcycles and motor vehicles under 3.5 tonnes there is one motorway vignette, which is a 10 -day, 2 -month or annual permit available. In addition, there are six special toll roads, which are exempt from the toll sticker. Here is the fee to be paid directly at the toll plazas.

Tolling over 3.5t

2004, the truck toll was introduced in Austria, before there was a separate truck vignette. Motor vehicles over 3.5 tonnes have since distance-based tolls by GO-Box. The toll will be levied by means of microwave technology, fully electronically and without affecting the flow of traffic. To prevent toll refugees there on most lower- road parallel to highways by driving restrictions on heavy goods vehicles.

Vignettes and GO-Boxes are available at petrol stations among others.

CURRENT road network

Subnets

The current network of motorways and highways consists of two sub-networks that are not connected by an Austrian domestic highway or expressway. The western portion of network covers the A12 ( Inn Valley motorway ), the A13 (Brenner motorway ), the A14 ( Rhine Valley / Walgau motorway ) and the S16 (Arlberg expressway). The eastern portion of network covers the remaining highways and expressways. The only highway connection between two subnets represents the Great German Eck and performs on German territory ( from the west A12, border crossing Kufstein / Kiefersfelden, German Federal Highway 93, Triangle Inn Valley, German Federal Highway 8, crossing " great Walser mountain", continue on A1).

Highways

All Austrian highways are road traffic law posted as a motorway and must therefore have highway cross section. Exceptions are made only for some single-tube motorway tunnel on the A9 and A11. All other highways are all in four - or multi-lane, high standard and are equipped with separated carriageways.

Highways

Since the Austrian Road Traffic Act has no expressway, the highways are signposted according to extension state as either freeway or highway.

The highways S1, S2, S6, S33 and S36 are road traffic law throughout the rank of a highway, S4 and S31 in part. A special case is the S35, which is signposted despite highway cross section and speed limits of up to 130 km / h because of the tight curves only as a highway.

In addition to the highways there are also some roads with motorway cross-section which are located in provincial administration, and therefore not part of the motorway and trunk road network.

Motorways

Listed are also intersections of motorways or dual carriageways with motorway feeders or former highways.

Highway maintenance

The motorways and expressways are 44 motorway maintenance receive which are operated by Asfinag. An exception is the Autobahnmeisterei Eibesbrunn, which is operated by the private operating company Bonaventura.

Traffic

The most heavily traveled highways and expressway sections are Austria (March 2010):

Section Control

Compliance with the speed is monitored by Section Control on the following sections of motorway.

Air Pollution Control Act (IG -L)

Based on the Pollution Control Air ( IG -L), countries can arrange temporal and spatial restrictions for motor vehicles or for certain categories of motor vehicles. One of these measures is a speed limit of 100 km / h on motorway sections, which are located in a redevelopment area. In most cases, this is done automatically increased pollution from traffic control systems ( VBA). Restrictions on the following routes are currently available:
