Charles G. Williams

Charles Grandison Williams ( born October 18, 1829 in Royalton, Niagara County, New York; † 30 March 1892 in Watertown, South Dakota ) was an American politician. Between 1873 and 1883 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After a good primary education Charles Williams studied law in Rochester. In 1856 he moved to Wisconsin and settled in Janesville. There he worked as a lawyer. In his new home, Williams began a political career as a member of the Republican Party. From 1869 to 1872 he sat in the Senate of Wisconsin. At times, he was president of this chamber.

In the congressional elections of 1872, Williams was the first electoral district of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on March 4, 1873, the successor of Alexander Mitchell. After four elections he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1883 five legislative sessions. From 1881 to 1883 he was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the elections of 1882, Charles William was defeated by Democrat John Winans. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on 30 March 1892 in Watertown (South Dakota) and was buried in Janesville.
