Philetus Sawyer

Philetus Sawyer ( born September 22, 1816 in Whiting, Addison County, Vermont, † March 29, 1900 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Wisconsin in both houses of Congress.

Philetus Sawyer was still an infant when his parents moved with him in 1817 to Crown Point in New York State. He lived there until 1847; then he settled in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, where he worked in the lumber industry.

In his new home, Sawyer started to press and politically. In 1857 and 1861, he sat in the Wisconsin State Assembly, from 1863 to 1864, he was then mayor of Oshkosh. In 1864 he was finally elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he remained on 4 March 1865 to 3 March 1875. During this time he was chairman of several committees.

Sawyer not applied for re-election, but returned in 1881 as a U.S. Senator in the Congress back. There he completed two terms of office; on a re-election he resigned in 1892. In the Senate, he served as Chairman of the Railway Board. Then he turned back to his business before he died in Oshkosh in March 1900.

The Sawyer County, Wisconsin was named after Philetus Sawyer.
