China Open (Snooker)

The China Open is a tournament of Snooker Main Tour.

History

1997/98 the tournament was first held as a catch China Challenge, then still without the status of a world ranking tournament. For the next four years it has been in China International (later in China Open ) renamed and got World Ranking status.

In calendar year 1999, two tournaments were held, since the discharge date for the tournament after the 1998/99 season was moved from March to December. Venues were Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. After the tournament was over given starting exposed, so that for two seasons held a tournament in Asia.

Due to the increasing popularity of snooker in the Asian tournament in the 2004/05 season was revived. Since then, it always finds the end of March in Beijing last tournament before the World Snooker Championship. Shanghai was in 2007 with the Shanghai Masters own ranking tournament.

The great enthusiasm of the Chinese audience for the snooker sport is also reflected in the audience during a live broadcast. In 2005, more than 110 million people watched the final victory of local hero Ding Junhui, who was able to attend thanks to a wildcard, against the multiple world champion Stephen Hendry on Chinese television. Ding Junhui making it the second youngest winner of a full ranking tournament.

The contracts signed in January 2007 between the host, the Chinese Billiards and Snooker Association, and the World Snooker Association secured the hosting of the tournament, initially until 2011.

There are now next to the China Open and the Shanghai Masters already mentioned another great snooker tournaments in China, including the Wuxi Classic, the Haikou World Open and the 2012 inaugural International Championship.

In the history of China Open the previous four maximum Breaks were obtained. The first succeeded James Wattana from Thailand in the first edition of the tournament in 1997 against Pang Wei Guo. The second scored Mehmet Husnu from Cyprus in qualifying in 1998. Stephen Maguire came in 2008 and the date of last scored in the semi-final against Ryan Day, Neil Robertson in 2010 in the match against Peter Ebdon.

Record winner is Mark Williams with three titles.
