Flag of Burundi

The flag of Burundi was officially introduced on June 28, 1967, the proportions were changed on 27 September 1982 by original 2:3 by 3:5.

Appearance and meaning

The colors of the flag of Burundi have the following meaning:

  • Red stands for the victim in the struggle for independence
  • White symbolizes peace
  • Green stands for progress and hope

The three standing in the middle of six-pointed stars are (working progress unity ) or the three ethnic groups in the country, the Tutsi, Hutu and Twa to the motto Travail Unité Progres.

The angular cross in the flag seems to derive from the old flag of Belgian airline Sabena. Clear evidence is there but not.

History

During the time of the Kingdom of Burundi 1962-1966 Karyenda a drum and a sorghum plant instead of stars was displayed on the exact representation of different variants have survived. In the transition phase in November 1966 flag was hoisted without symbols for a short time later - until March 1967 - the sorghum plant came back to the flag. In 1982, the aspect ratio was changed.
