Hattmatt
Hattmatt is a commune in the Bas -Rhin in the Alsace region. Administratively, it is assigned to the Canton Saverne and the district Saverne.
Geography
The village with 685 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located on the Zinsel 35 km north-west of Strasbourg. The southern boundary of the municipality is the Autoroute A4 route from Metz to Strasbourg.
History
The place name probably means " mat of the Lord Hatto " where the mat Alemannic term for meadow or pasture and Hatto is an old German first name.
In the Middle Ages there were on site two separate villages: Hattmatt and Wiesenau. The latter disappeared in the middle of the 15th century, presumably with the incursions of the Écorcheurs ( relic of the mercenary gang of the Armagnacs ). Hattmatt was invested on the house of Hanau -Lichtenberg with the territory. In the wake of the French Revolution in 1793 the lease lapses.
