Lupstein

Lupstein is a commune of 836 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Région de Saverne.

Geography

Lupstein is located nine kilometers southeast of Saverne and 26 kilometers north- west of Strasbourg. The anger, the Mossel and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin run in the municipal area, west and north of the village.

History

During excavations in the municipality of pottery shards have been found from the Hallstatt and Gallo- Roman remains of a villa rustica. The villa was burnt down in the 5th century. Her remains were discovered in 1911 during construction of the mayoralty. The wall paintings of the Villa are now displayed in the Musée de Strasbourg Archaeological, Museum in Saverne has a copy.

Lupstein 739 was first mentioned in records. 1525 place in the German Peasants' War was ( 1524-1526 ) burned and later rebuilt.

Attractions

A charnel house from 1503, built by Swen Matheus, is located in the graveyard at the Church of Saint- Quentin. It was entered into the Register of Monuments historiques additional 1993. The church of Saint -Quentin was rebuilt in 1503, the medieval tower remained. In the 18th century the church was destroyed to see them enlarged in 1783 to rebuild. The bell tower was built in 1862.

The four villages Bappenheim, Wundermutzheim, Schoetelsheim and Betz home lay on the today's municipality of Lupstein and disappeared in the 14th or 15th century. From Bappenheim only the poplar mill remained. Wundermutzheim was mentioned in documents as early as the 8th century and was last mentioned in 1356. The only remnant of the village are a fountain and the chapel Sainte -Barbe. The chapel was built in 1862 on the foundations of the old church of Wundermutzheim.

Economy

The image of the church is dominated by pastures and fields. Major lines of business are in Lupstein feed production, farming, viticulture, fruit growing and breeding of domestic cattle and hogs. There is a dairy on site.
