John Brown Francis

John Brown Francis ( born May 31, 1791 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † August 9, 1864 in Warwick, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician and 1833-1838 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland. Between 1844 and 1845 he represented his state in the U.S. Senate.

Early years

John Francis was the grandson of John Brown, who as a deputy belonged to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800. He attended the public schools in Providence and then studied until 1808 at the city's Brown University, which was founded by members of his family. He then studied law. But he has never worked despite his admission to the Bar as a lawyer.

Political career

Between 1821 and 1829 John Francis MP in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In 1831, he was also a member of the State Senate. 1833 was chosen as a candidate of the Whig John Francis Party as the new governor of his state. Between 1 May 1833 to May 2, 1838, he completed then five terms in office. During this time, a new law to control the banks were adopted, introduced a lottery and reorganized the militia.

Between 1841 and 1854, Francis was Chancellor of Brown University, whose board of trustees he served since 1828. Following the resignation of William John Francis Sprague was elected to succeed him as a Class 1 senator in Congress. There he finished between January 1844 and March 3, 1845 25 the term of office of his predecessor. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on engrossed bills. Then joined in March 1845, the newly elected Senator Albert C. Greene to his successor.

Further CV

After his return from Washington, John Francis 1845-1856 once again a state senator in Rhode Iceland. After he retired from politics and devoted himself to his private interests, for which now belonged to agriculture. He died in 1864 at his estate " Spring Green " at Warwick. John Francis was married twice and had five children.
