Lena, Asturias

Lena is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain. It is divided into 24 parroquias. Center of the municipality is Pola de Lena.

Location

Bounded on the north by Mieres, in the south of the province of León in the west of Riosa and Quirós and in the east of Aller.

Geography

Across the region and the parroquias several important rivers draw that were used in the past for rafts. The most important are Huerna, Pajeres, Caudal and all.

History

The first records date from the reigns of Ramiro I. and Ordoño I, that is, from the 9th century. In this time, the construction of the Sanctuary of Santa Cristina de Lena goes back.

In 1266, it was confirmed by Alfonso X el Sabio in a document, the Carta Puebla, the community first.

Attractions

  • El mosaico de Vega de Ciego 1921 found during excavations of a Roman villa and is now in the Archaeological Museum of Asturias.
  • Church of St. Christina (Iglesia Santa Cristina de Lena) from the 9th century.

Festivals and Celebrations

On the first weekend in July, the "Fiesta del Cordero a la Estaca " is ( a kind of local festival with traditional dances, food and music ) celebrated together with the municipality of Quirós.
