Castropol

Castropol is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain.

Location

In the north, the community is bordered by the Bay of Biscay, in the south of Vegadeo and Villanueva de Oscos, to the west by the Eo and the Galician town of Ribadeo in the east of Tapia de Casariego, El Franco and Boal.

History

Finds from the Bronze Age, proving the long colonization of the region.

The Roman domination over the region along the Navia had a significant impact in Castropol and throughout the surrounding area.

In the Middle Ages the city played at the mouth of the Eo a subordinate role. 1032 the first monastery, Monasterio de San Juan de Corias was founded, which caused long time for discord with the so weakened city of Lugo.

Only Alfonso VII ended in the 13th century the dispute by belonging to the west of the Eo located Lugo Galicia as to specific and lying on Ostofer Castropol presented under the sovereignty of Oviedo.

From the 14th century Castropol became the economic and administrative center of the area between the Navia and Eo the. Castropol remained so until the 18th century, when English troops invaded and had to pay the city dearly for their freedom.

Geology

Land

The predominantly of limestone and sandstone subsoil with the Pico de la Filso Bobia ( 1,197 m) as highest point is typical of the entire coastal region with its steep cliffs, bays, forests and meadows.

Waters

The community is located at the mouth of the Eo the Bay of Biscay, the estuary is called in Spanish also ria de Eo.

Climate

Due to the Gulf Stream, there is here an almost Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, in spring and autumn it is sometimes relatively strong storms.

Economy

In the industrial field, the company Los Astilleros Gondan SA the largest employer in the parroquias Barres and Berbessa there are still some old shipyards still build wooden ships, for which the local carpenters are very well known in Spain.

In the bay there are large mussel and oyster farms. Tourism continues to be the most important growth factor in the region.
