Nelson G. Kraschel

Nelson George Kraschel ( born October 27, 1889 Macon County, Illinois, † March 15, 1957 in Harlan, Iowa ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and from 1937 to 1939 the 27th Governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years and political rise

Kraschel, who was born on a farm near Macon, attended the public schools of his home. In 1910 he moved to Harlan, Iowa, where he was working as a farmer and Viehauktionator. In this profession he was very successful. 1932 was a candidate of the Democrat Kraschel for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Iowa and was elected. He was until 1937 the deputy of Governor Clyde L. Herring.

Governor of Iowa

In 1936 he was elected governor and then himself introduced in his new position on January 14, 1937. His two-year term passed without highlights. Worth mentioning are the foundation of a social welfare committee ( social welfare board) and the successful settlement of a strike. In 1938 Kraschel sought a second term, but was defeated in the elections against George A. Wilson.

In the year 1942, Kraschel competed again in vain for the office of governor. Kraschel was a supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal policies. Between 1943 and 1949 he was employed by the management of the institution for the granting of loans to farmers ( Farm Credit Administration). He then retired to his farm. Nelson Kraschel was married to Agnes Johnson, with whom he had three children.
