Nieby

Nieby (Danish: Nyby ) is a town on the Baltic Sea in the district of Schleswig -Flensburg, in Schleswig- Holstein with the districts Nieby, Falshöft ( Falshoved ) Beveroe ( Bæverø ) and Niebywesterfeld, as well as almost the entire nature reserve Geltinger Birk.

Geography

Nieby is located about five kilometers from Gelting directly in the open Baltic Sea on a peninsula at the output of the Flensburg Fjord in the northern part of the country Angelner.

North of the local bird sanctuary Geltinger Birk, with its reed marshes, dunes and sea grass meadows, where over 200 species of birds can be observed. It is the largest protected area in the district. Large parts of the adjoining areas are designated as Natura 2000 - Areas protected areas with European importance.

History

From the Neolithic period the megalithic grave Nieby comes.

The place Nieby was first mentioned in the 15th century. Probably the new village (the name above) was founded long ago as the successor of the depopulated during the great plague village Solby. In the 15th century, the area was part of the estate Düttebüll, smaller possessions belonged temporarily to the goods Rundhof and Gelting.

Since 1867/71 Nieby is an independent country church that was located there in 1928 increased by the portion of the Gutsbezirks Gelting.

In the 1970s Nieby was declared an independent investigation of the TÜV Hannover a favorite for a nuclear repository. These plans were abandoned in favor of Gorleben.

Economy

The place where there is a pilot station for the Flensburg Fjord is dominated by agriculture, fisheries, trade and tourism. The district Falshöft is known by a gentle tourism and dominated by reed and wooden houses.

By 1996 was in Nieby barracks of the German Navy. The telecommunications tower is today (2008) still in operation. Since the closure of the barracks the site is broke and is not used.
