Qualcomm Incorporated is a research and development company for mobile communications, based in San Diego, California. With a market share of 4.3 percent since 2012 according to Qualcomm Samsung and Intel 's third largest chip manufacturers in the world, but does not have its own manufacturing facilities ( fabless ).

History

Qualcomm was founded in 1985 by Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi, which had been founded in 1969 the company Linkabit.

Products

Processors

For mobile phones and tablet computers Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs has developed the series. The processors are manufactured, among others, the Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC.

Mobile

Qualcomm developed a digital cellular technology, based on CDMA; the first version was standardized as IS -95. There has been since its creation newer variations with the same schema, such as IS -2000 1x and EVDO. Qualcomm set forth formerly CDMA2000 mobile phones and radio stations. Qualcomm sold its radio station business to Ericsson and its mobile manufacturing Kyocera and focuses today on developing and licensing wireless technologies and selling ASICs that implement them.

OmniTRACS

Qualcomm's first products are the OmniTRACS satellite communications and tracking system that is used by transport company and need another, the digital radio communication. All you need is a Viterbi decoder. In Europe, the system is marketed under the name EutelTRACS, transmits at a frequency of 10 to 14 GHz and has been in operation since 1991.

Projects

Other Qualcomm projects include the development of the Globalstar satellite system (a joint venture with Loral Space & Communications ) and a joint venture in the field Digitalkinematographie with Technicolor. Qualcomm developed BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) as a platform for phones. Qualcomm monitored and sells the e -mail program Eudora.

2009 founded Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Innovation Center ( QuIC ) for the development of open source software for mobile phones.
