1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

The Games of the 11th Youth A World Championship in 1987 found in the period from 26 December 1986 to 4 January 1987 in Czechoslovakia. The B group was in Rouen, France, pitted, and the C - group in Esbjerg, Denmark. A total of 22 teams participated in the three tournaments.

World cup

The World Cup took place in the Czechoslovak towns Nitra, Piešťany, Trenčín and Topoľčany. The world champion secured for the first time in Finland, which benefited from the disqualification of Canada on the final day. Behind the Czechoslovakia and Sweden placed. To disqualification of Canadians had come to a mass brawl in the game with the USSR, which was also subsequently eliminated from the tournament. Since the games against the teams remained valid, the winless Switzerland rose from the B group.

Mode

As in previous years, a total of eight teams for the tournament admitted whose squad exclusively of actors with an age of 20 years passed (U -20). The only newcomer was the reigning World Champion B from Poland to the participants, who took the place of the previously relegated in West German team. The mode provided for a common group in which all teams had one each to compete against their opponents. The winner of this group was World Champion, the last placed dismounted in the B World Cup.

Tournament

The tournament was overshadowed by a scandal: Already at the World Championships a year ago it had happened turbulent in the prestige duel between Canada and the USSR, and both teams had announced revenge for the events. This time too much explosive was in this game, even though only the Canadians had in a possible victory chances of winning the title. Seven minutes from the end, it came with the score at 4-2 for Canada to a mass brawl between the two teams, in which in addition to all involved players and the coaches and staff. The referee then had to cancel the game.

The International Ice Hockey Federation ( IIHF ) responded to these events with draconian penalties. In addition to the disqualification of both teams a total of 19 players were punished with a suspension for each 18 months, the penalty for the Soviet and Canadian coaches and staff amounted to two years. During the aborted game was disqualified, on the other hand kept the results from the other games to be valid. Primarily, it was the team from Finland benefit and was thus for the first time in its history, Junior World Champion. The winless during the entire tournament history Swiss had to dismount the other hand, as the teams from Canada and the USSR were allowed to remain despite their disqualification in the A group.
