63rd Golden Globe Awards
The 63rd ceremony of the Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ( HFPA ) each year in the fields of film (13 categories) and television awards (11 categories), took place on 16 January 2006 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills instead. As favorite dramas Brokeback Mountain went (7 nominations ), Good Night, and Good Luck. and Match Point (both 4 nominations ) as well as the musical film version of The Producers ( 4 nominations ) into the race. The Golden Globes apply each year as a barometer for the upcoming Academy Awards. A novelty in 2006 represented the fact that all the Best in the category film - drama productions nominated belonged to the genre of independent film.
With four won Golden Globes, including the categories of Drama and Director, Brokeback Mountain became the most successful film of the awards, closely followed by James Mangold's Walk the Line, a biopic about the famous American country singer Johnny Cash (1932-2003), which was awarded in three categories. In the lead actor categories with Felicity Huffman ( Transamerica ) and Philip Seymour Hoffman ( Capote ) and Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix were (both Walk the Line ), the actors interspersed, which were traded in advance of the ceremony as favorite. Big loser of the evening was the musical film adaptation of The Producers, which ran completely empty despite four nominations. Best Foreign Language Film, the Palestinian contribution Paradise Now prevailed, which was financed from Germany.
With the victories of Brokeback Mountain and Felicity Huffman and Philip Seymour Hoffman all prizes were awarded to films in the drama section for the first time in which homosexual or transsexual roles were in the foreground. The renowned film composer John Williams was able to secure with his score for Memoirs of a Geisha at its 22nd Golden Globe nomination the fourth of his career.
