Evan Lysacek had shown no quadruple jump and Plyushchenko was of the opinion that one should not be Olympic champion without a quad jump: "I think we need to change the assessment system - a quadruple jump is a quadruple jump. If an Olympic champion does not quadruple jump shows, I do not know ... ". Even before his freestyle Plyushchenko had said: "Without a four times it's not men's figure skating. I will definitely show a four -fold. I believe that quadruple jumps are the future of figure skating. The quadruple jump is necessary, that is my opinion. " Plyushchenko put his words into deeds and showed the quadruple jump in his freestyle in a quadruple toe loop - triple toe loop - combination. However, he left a planned double loop jumps from a combination and landed most of his jumps not as perfectly clean as it had done Lysacek. Despite his quadruple jump, Plyushchenko got a lower score than Lysacek in the technical elements. Plyushchenko told a Russian newspaper that in the short program three judges had put him regarding his figure skating skills to the courts 21 and 22 and the computer evaluated all three and for judges who Plyushchenko were set to square one eliminated from the championship. " If that's the way the votes of the judges will be forgiven, then you can win and lose just as good. Do not get me wrong, I do not want to criticize the new rules, they are not bad, but they need further improvements. " Plyushchenko also expressed upset over the Russian Figure Skating Federation, and that this would not vouch enough for his athletes. " After the short program, I should have had at least five points ahead of the others. At the end there were only 0.55 points, our association does not respond. " Pair Skating Legend Irina Rodnina noticed that although she had hoped Plyushchenko would win, he had many small mistakes in his free program and lacked the passion that he in Turin had four years previously shown. Contrast Plyushchenko received support from Elvis Stojko and the coaches Reinhard E. Ketterer, Tatiana Tarasova and Halyna Smijewska. In the ISU Conference in June of baseline value was slightly increased for quadruple jumps.

The following World Cup in London ( Canada ), he dropped out in order to recover from a disc surgery in Israel, and only came back in November at an international competition in Riga, where he was with a new personal best the clear winner.
