Flag of Angola

The flag of Angola based on the flag of the ruling party MPLA, which was used by this during the independence struggle. The flag was officially adopted on 11 November 1975.

Description

The flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes of red at the top and bottom black. The color red symbolizes the socialism that the MPLA sought, the black is for Africa. Later, the red was less in the sense of the party program defined but rather for the blood that was shed by Angolans in the struggle for their independence. So the meaning is specified in Article 162 of the constitution of 1992, which sets out the national flag.

Above the two strips in the center of the flag, the emblem of Angola, which represents half of a gear, a machete and a five-pointed star. The gear symbolizes the working class, the machete, the farmers, the star of progress and internationalism. The similarity with the hammer - and - sickle symbol in the flag of the Soviet Union refers to communism.

History

Already the Kingdom of Kongo, which at times dominated the north of Angola, led a flag. During the Portuguese colonial era, only the flag of Portugal was used. 1967 there was a proposal for the Colonies insert each their coat of arms in the flag of Portugal. The proposal was not taken up.

2003, proposed that the current flag to be replaced by a " more optimistic ". The similarity to the flag of the MPLA has been criticized by the opposition. The aspect ratio would remain the same, the sun symbol in the middle to resemble cave paintings in the Tchitundo - Hulu Cave. A counter-argument against the draft was that this flag could be confused with the flag of Costa Rica.
