John A. Maguire

John Arthur Maguire ( born November 29, 1870 Elizabeth, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, † July 1, 1939 in Lincoln, Nebraska ) was an American politician. Between 1909 and 1915 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1882, John Maguire moved with his parents in the Dakota Territory, where the family settled near Plankington in present-day South Dakota. John attended until 1889 the Plankington High School. Between 1890 and 1893 he studied at the Agricultural College of South Dakota in Brookings and at the Iowa State College of Agriculture. With a law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1899, he finished his education.

John Maguire was a member of the Democratic Party. From 1899 to 1901 he was vice- chamberlain in Lancaster County. Since 1902 he worked as a lawyer in Lincoln. In 1904, Maguire was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis. In 1905 he was on the board of his party in Nebraska.

In the congressional elections of 1908 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. There he broke on March 4, 1909 from Ernest M. Pollard, whom he had defeated in the election. After he was confirmed in the years 1910 and 1912, John Maguire was able to complete a total of three parliamentary terms in Congress until March 3, 1915. But in 1914 he lost the Republican C. Frank Reavis.

After the end of his time in Congress Maguire again worked as a lawyer. In January 1938 he became a judge in a city court. John Maguire died in July 1939 and was buried in Lincoln.
