Johnny Ekström

Johnny Ekström ( born March 5, 1965 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish football player.

Career

Clubs

Emerged from the youth of IFK Gothenburg, drew Johnny Ekström 1984 in their first team. There he got his big breakthrough; as a fast striker, he made international attention when his club 1986 to the semi-finals of the European Cup of Champions ( precursor of the Champions League) pushed forward and there was eliminated on penalties against FC Barcelona.

For the 1986/87 season then the first transfer followed abroad - the Italian first division club FC Empoli ( newcomer in Serie A ). After two seasons he changed to the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich. On July 23, 1988 ( 1st Round ), he was in a 3-0 win at home against Eintracht Frankfurt and crowned his debut this with his first goal, 2-0 in the 81st minute. With 23 league games and seven goals scored, he contributed to the championship in 1989; In addition, he scored twice ( on 5 October 1988 at Legia Warsaw - Full 7:3 for Bayern Munich) in eight UEFA Cup matches.

After just one season in Germany was followed by seasons in France, Sweden, Italy and Spain before he returned to Germany.

From 1 July 1994 Johnny Ekström at Dynamo Dresden under contract. Again, his first goal he achieved already on the opening day on 20 August 1994 in a 1-1 draw at home against Werder Bremen with the opening goal in the 3rd minute. In the subsequent 29 Premier League games, he hit six more times before he left the club.

Eintracht Frankfurt was from 1 July 1995 Ekström's third division club in Germany. In the first season ranged his two goals in 16 games is not good to hold the class. The following season Ekström completed 18 second division games in which he scored five goals and ended on 11 June 1997 (34th Round ), 2-1 win in the away match against VfB Oldenburg 64 minutes into his footballing activity in Germany.

He returned to the club where it all began - to IFK Göteborg. After a season for this and three goals in Allsvenskan he ended his football career.

National

On 1 May 1986, he debuted in Malmö in the senior team goalless draw against the selection of Greece. Then he wore the national jersey still 46 times and was at the 1990 World Cup in Italy as well as at the European Championships in 1992 in their own country the respective squads to.
