Juha Mieto

Juha Iisakki Mieto ( born November 20, 1949 in Kurikka, Finland ) is a former Finnish cross-country skier and was from 2007 to 2011 Member of the Finnish Parliament.

Life and career

The 1.96 m wide Mieto dominated the Finnish cross-country, and in particular its parade route 15 km, for a decade and is still one of the most popular athletes of his country. In 1974 he was awarded the Holmenkollen medal.

In international competition Mieto was considered "eternal second " because he repeatedly fell just short of a victory in the big races. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, he lost the race over 15 km around a hundredth of a second against Thomas Wassberg. Wassberg advocated the division of the first place, because of the minimal projection and as he was thus at an advantage in that it was the time difference in the run- known (see Tracking). The IOC rejected this request in accordance with the rules from. After this race, the time measurement in cross-country skiing was limited to tenths of a second.

In the Finnish parliamentary elections in 2007 he was a candidate in the electoral district of Vaasa for the rural - liberal Finnish Centre Party and was elected as an MP. With 13,768 votes he received the seventh highest number of votes in the whole of Finland. In the subsequent elections in April 2011, however, he failed to enter parliament clearly.
