Monroe County (Wisconsin)
Monroe County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin in the United States. In the census in 2010, the County had 44 673 inhabitants and a population density of 19.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sparta, which was named after the ancient city of Sparta.
Geography
The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Wisconsin, is in the west about 49 miles from Minnesota in the southwest about 60 km from Iowa and has an area of 2352 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
Monroe County was formed in 1854 from parts of La Crosse County. It was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Monroe County 40 899 people in 15,399 households. 10,794 families living in the county. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.52 percent White, 0.46 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.48 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.85 percent from other races groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.81 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 15,399 households out of which 34.5 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers. 29.9 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households and 10.7 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size is 3.11 people.
28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 to 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males.
