Monroe County (Wisconsin)

Monroe County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin in the United States. In the census in 2010, the County had 44 673 inhabitants and a population density of 19.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sparta, which was named after the ancient city of Sparta.

The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Wisconsin, is in the west about 49 miles from Minnesota in the southwest about 60 km from Iowa and has an area of 2352 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

Monroe County was formed in 1854 from parts of La Crosse County. It was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.
