Jefferson County (Wisconsin)

The Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2010, the County had 83 686 inhabitants and a population density of 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jefferson.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Wisconsin, is in the south about 40 miles from Illinois, in the east about 60 miles away from Lake Michigan. It has an area of 1509 square kilometers, of which 67 square kilometers are water surface.

The county is traversed from north to south-west from the Rock River, a left tributary of the Mississippi. In the extreme southwest of the river as it flows through the county leaves of Lake Koshkonong.

History

Jefferson County was formed in 1836 from parts of Milwaukee County. It was named, as well as the district capital, probably earlier to the origin of settlers, the Jefferson County, New York or after the third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson.

Historical buildings

  • In Fort Atkinson Fort Atkinson is the Water Tower. The water tower was added in 2005 as a historical monument.
  • In Waterloo, at the intersection of Madison Street and Monroe Street, is the historic Waterloo Downtown Historic District. The area includes 29 buildings. It was recorded as a historic district with the number 00001360 on 8 November 2000 by the National Register of Historic Places.

Population

According to the census in 2010 lived in Jefferson County 83 686 people in 31,925 households. The population density was 58 people per square kilometer. In the 31,925 households lived statistically 2.52 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 96.8 percent white, 0.9 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 6.9 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.2 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 54,705. The per capita income was $ 25,449. 10.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
