Plombières-les-Bains

Plombières- les- Bains is a commune with 1856 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region; it belongs to the district Epinal, Vosges méridionales the community association, and is the capital of the canton Plombières- les- Bains.

Geography

The city is situated on the banks of the river Augronne. On the territory of the municipality there are 27 weak mineralized hot springs, which are rich in trace elements. The thermal springs of Plombières temperatures reach 57-84 degrees. The municipality is located in the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

History

The sources of Plombières have already been discovered to Gallo-Roman times and used for a first thermal bath. Destroyed during the Great Migration, it was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. Among the visitors of the bath were Michel de Montaigne, Voltaire, the Duke of Guise, the dukes of Lorraine, Beaumarchais (according to some sources, the premiere of the romantic comedy is supposed to have taken place, the great Day or The Marriage of Figaro here ), Napoleon Bonaparte, Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoléon III. , Hector Berlioz, Alphonse de Lamartine, and Alfred de Musset.

On July 21, 1858 took place at the Pavillon des Princes (now the management of the Société thermal ) the secret meeting between Napoleon III. and Camillo Cavour, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, instead. At this meeting, the two entered into a contract, in which France 's support for the case of an Austrian attack promised (→ Sardinian War). In return, the Kingdom of Savoy and the county of Nice was forced to resign. This agreement was important for the unification of Italy in 1861 (→ Risorgimento ).
