2008–09 Czech Extraliga season

The 2008 /09 was the 16th regular hosting of the Czech Extraliga. In the playoff finals last season's runners- HC Energie Karlovy Vary defeated the reigning champions HC Slavia Prague 4-2 and won the first Czech league title in club history. New participants in the following season, the HC Kometa Brno, who acquired the license of HC Orli Znojemští and thus rises in the Extraliga.

Mode

In 52 games, all teams play against each other four times each, each team throughout the season 26 home and 26 away games. The teams ranked 1-6 qualify directly for the play-offs, which will be played in best-of- seven- mode. The teams ranked 7-10 play the other two playoff spots in the best-of -five from each other. The remaining four teams will play a relegation round (play- out), in which the participant is determined at the League Relegation against the champions of League 1 in a further double Round (6 each home and away games ).

HC Lasselsberger Plzeň - HC Ocelari Třinec

In the pre- playoffs the seventh- placed HC Lasselsberger Plzeň met the HC Ocelari Třinec, who had finished the regular season in tenth place. After five games, the team was made up by Plzeň 3-2 victories and reached the quarter-finals Palyoff while for Třinec the season was over.

HC Vitkovice Steel - White Tigers Liberec

In the second pre- playoff series of the eight HC Vitkovice Steel placed met the White Tigers Liberec, who had finished the regular season in ninth place. After three games, the team of HC Vitkovice Steel Worker of reaching the playoffs, as it was able to achieve three clear victories against the White Tiger from Liberec.

Quarterfinals

HC Slavia Praha - HC Vitkovice Steel

In the playoff quarterfinals met the winner of the Main Round, the HC Slavia Prague, on the eighth-placed HC Vitkovice Steel. This de club of steelworkers from Ostrava was already a 3-1 lead, but Slavia won the next three games and drew with it into the semi-finals.

HC Moeller Pardubice - HC Plzeň Lasselsberger

In the second quarterfinal pitting the main round Second, the HC Moeller Pardubice, to the HC Lasselsberger Plzeň, who had completed the main round in seventh place and had qualified in the pre- playoffs for the quarter-finals. The team from Pardubice was the favorite in this quarter-final series over a maximum of seven games since Pardubice was one of the dominant teams of the main round and Plzeň had to cope by participating in the pre- playoffs more games. In a very balanced series in which two teams go Away Wins, sat ultimately the team from Pilsen by than it was in the second extension of the seventh final game by Martin Adamsky for scoring in order to win and to qualify for the semifinals.

HC Litvinov - HC Energie Karlovy Vary

The third pairing of the quarter-final belonged to the main round Third HC Litvinov and the runner-up in 2008, the HC Energie Karlovy Vary. Although the latter had completed the main round ranked only six, he defeated the HC Litvinov in a sweep 4-0 victories and reached the semi-finals.

HC Sparta Prague - RI Okna Zlín

The fourth quarter-final series was between the fourth-placed HC Sparta Prague and the fifth of the preliminary round, the RI Okna Zlín discharged. Here, the favored club from Prague prevailed 4-1 victories and thereby reached the semifinals of the playoffs.

Semifinal

HC Slavia Praha - HC Plzeň Lasselsberger

In the first semifinal series of the main round first HC Slavia Prague hit the seventh placed HC Lasselsberger Plzeň. After five games, the last year's champion from Prague prevailed 4-1 victories and reached the finals again for the championship. In the fifth game of Martin Straka could not compensate for the 5:5 one seconds left in the game, but ultimately decided Vladimír Růžička junior converted a penalty the party and thus the series in favor of Slavia Prague.

HC Sparta Praha - HC Energie Karlovy Vary

The second semifinal series contested by the Fourth of the main round, the HC Sparta Prague, and the sixth-placed HC Energie Karlovy Vary. Here, the runner-up in Karlsbad in 2008 kept the upper hand against the club from the capital Prague and drew 4-2 wins in the playoff finals.

Final

In the finals of the playoffs in 2009, the same teams meet as last season, as the reigning Czech champions HC Slavia Prague prevailed against the HC Lasselsberger Plzeň, while the runner-up in 2008, the HC Energie Karlovy Vary, local rivals Slavia Prague, HC Sparta Prague, defeated in the semifinals.

Master of the 2008/09 season was the HC Energie Karlovy Vary, who won against HC Slavia Prague 4-2. This Karlovy Vary won the first title in their history, reaching the same time the biggest success in club history.

Playouts

The playouts were played in a double round, taking with all the points and goals from the main round. It was last year's Up, the BK Mladá Boleslav, while many points to catch up to its competitors, but ultimately remained in last place. To ensure that this meets the master of the first league, last year's relegated HC Slovan Ustecti Lvi.

Expulsion

In the relegation series to the descent and ascent hit the last placed the playout, the BK Mladá Boleslav, the master of the first league, the HC Slovan Ustecti Lvi.
