Amsterdam Oud-West

Oud-West is a district of the municipality of Amsterdam in the city of Amsterdam West and is part of the Dutch province of North Holland. The footprint of the quarter was (July 2009 ) 1.75 km ²; in 2003 Oud-West had a population of 13,905 people number and 177 different nationalities in 2007.

Importance

In the broadest sense Oud-West was the name given to all older neighborhood before the Second World War in Amsterdam -West, including the districts of De Baarsjes, Westerpark and district Bos en Lommerange.

History

With the emergence of a pedestrian path from Amsterdam to Sloten, the later streets Heiligenweg and Overtoom, begins the story of Oud -West. To 1661, the channel was created Kwakerspoel where is the Bellamyplein today in this district. It was a rural area with wood saw windmills and in 1890 the canal was drained. When the last windmill was dismantled developed from the former channel a road that Kwakerstraat. After 1636 came the first municipal building, hostels and printing and already in 1784 the church De Liefde in this area. In addition, more operating buildings, homes and thus a mixed district of Amsterdam originated. For the first electric tram came a great hall complex which served as the terminus building and repair for trams and buses. Since April 2002, De Hallen are listed buildings and there will be built a theater, gym, cinema and a library. In April 2009, stood in the district Oud-West 230 buildings under monument protection. The district chairman Bouwe Olij opened in December 2008 the new district museum Bellamy Buurtmuseum take place in the exhibitions on the history of Oud -West.

The district Oud -West is officially divided into living quarters ( July 2009):

  • Bellamybuurt: between Kinkerstraat, Bilderdijkkade and Tweede Kostverlorenkade.
  • Borgerbuurt: between Kinkerstraat, Bilderdijkgracht, Jacob van Lennep - Kanaal and Kostverlorenvaart.
  • Cremerbuurt: between Overtoom, Kostverlorenvaart, Jacob van Lennepkanaal and Nicolaas Beetsstraat.
  • De Costabuurt: v. between Hugo de Groot- canal Singel, J. Lennepkanaal and Bilderdijkgracht.
  • Helmersbuurt: between Singel canal, Overtoom, Nicolaas Beetsstraat and J. v. Lennepkanaal.
  • Vondelparkbuurt: between Amstelveenseweg, Overtoom, Vondelpark, and Stadhouderskade.
