Asahel W. Hubbard

Asahel Wheeler Hubbard ( born January 19, 1819 in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut; † September 22, 1879 in Sioux City, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1869 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Asahel Hubbard attended the common schools and then worked as a stonemason. He later attended another school in Middletown. In 1838 he moved to Rushville, Indiana, where he worked as a teacher among others. After studying law and its made ​​in 1841 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Rushville. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1847 and 1849 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Indiana.

1857, Hubbard moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he was active in the real estate business. From 1859 to 1862 he was a judge in the fourth judicial district of his new home state. Politically, Hubbard became a member of the Republican Party. In 1862 he was sixth in the newly created constituency of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. After two re- election he was able to complete three 1869 legislative sessions in Congress between 4 March 1863 and 3 March. This period was initially overshadowed by the Civil War. Then there was a lot of discussion in Congress about Reconstruction. On this issue there was a conflict between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson, culminating in a narrowly failed impeachment. While Hubbard's time in Congress were also the 13th and the 14th Amendment, discussed and adopted. It was about the abolition of slavery and the granting of citizenship to former slaves.

In 1868, Hubbard gave up for reelection. In 1871 he co-founded the First National Bank of Sioux City, whose president he will and should remain until January 15, 1879. Hubbard was also involved in railway development in Iowa and in the mining industry in Leadville (Colorado). He died in September 1879 in Sioux City and was also buried there. His son Elbert (1849-1912) sat 1905-1912 also for Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.
