Districts of Austria

The list of political districts and Austria Statutarstädte with indication of the respective federal state of Austria. In Vorarlberg and Lower Austria, the political districts called counties.

On top of these administrative units are not selected, but professional bodies.

Structure

On the division into districts follows the division into communities as the lowest level of political administrative divisions.

Most of the districts are political - not always congruent - also divided into judicial districts. There are 134 judicial districts with their own district courts. However, the jurisdiction of the circuit court does not have to follow the administrative divisions of the districts.

The capital Vienna is both state and political district and community. Vienna is divided into 23 municipal districts. These are in their design, but not comparable with political districts. They are led by elected Bezirksvorstehern, but have few skills.

The districts and statutory cities correspond to any level of the EU's NUTS breakdown (Eurostat ), NUTS -3: AT consists of groups of political / judicial districts. The level LAU -1 (Local administrative units, formerly NUTS -4) is not occupied in Austria, LAU 2: AT are the churches.

Trivia

  • All district towns are municipalities with the exception of the two market towns Reutte and Tamsweg. Also Groebming as Expositursitz is market town.
  • Three districts have not a closed area - so have enclaves.
