Fencing at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London ten competitions were held in fencing from July 28 to August 5, 2012 at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. There were six individual events ( epee, foil and saber, respectively for women and men ) and four team events ( Epee and Foil for women, foil and saber for men). Despite a request by the International Fencing Federation, FIE, the IOC stayed with past practice, not discharge two team events on a rotating basis. So in comparison to Beijing in 2008 the team competitions were replaced by women 's epee and men's foil in the women's saber and men's epee.

The semi-final between Britta Heidemann and Shin A- Lam led the Austrian referee Barbara Csar. With the score at 5:5 split second before the fight was the end of the automatic timing. The clock was then technical reasons, to a full second rest period of struggle reset in the Heidemann managed the winning goal. After a half -hour discussion of the referee -trailer due to the protest of the Korean team Heidemann was confirmed as the winner.

Qualification criteria

It qualified 36 athletes in the disciplines in which also team competitions are held, and 30 athletes in the disciplines and no team competition. Eight sites were rated benefits to the host. The total number of athletes is thus 212 main criterion for qualification were the respective world rankings with date of 2 April 2012.

For the team competitions each eight teams possibly the team of qualified host plus. Qualifies the first four teams in the world rankings and the best team from each continent were in the squares 5-16 (Asia / Oceania is a continental federation ). Ranked no team of a continent on the places 5 to 16, then the first qualified not qualified team of world ranking, regardless of the continent.

In the individual competitions, the 24 athletes that are used in the team, and the top seven athletes in the adjusted rankings start, two each from the Americas, Asia / Oceania and Europe, one from Africa. Five courts, two to Europe and one each to the other confederations were allocated through continental qualifying tournaments, in which only athletes were allowed to compete, the nation has not yet achieved a starting place. In the individual competitions, in which there is no team competition, qualified the first twelve athletes of the adjusted world rankings as well as the two bestplatziertesten then athletes from the continental federations. Ten courses, awarded four of Europe, three in Asia / Oceania, two of America and one on Africa, were continental qualification tournaments. The maximum number of athletes for each country is three for competitions or two for those without a team competitions.

Qualified athletes

Eight quota places were free to divide the host of the British Association. He secured as well as participation in two team events. Overall, athletes from 44 different NOCs could qualify.
