The territory of the municipality lies within the boundaries of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.
Among the districts ( fractions) are Capsano, Casale San Nicola, Cerchiara, Ceriseto, Cesa di Francia, Colli Berti, Fano a Corno, Forca di Valle, Pacciano, Pretara, San Giovanni, San Massimo, San Pietro and Trignano.
Borders the following municipalities: Calascio, Castel Castagna, Castelli, Colledara, Fano Adriano, L'Aquila, Pietracamela, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Tossicia.
