Skyscraper

→ Main article: List of skyscrapers in Europe

In contrast to Asia and North America, the construction of skyscrapers in major European cities is relatively uncommon. Due to the in European architectural history (especially in the Gothic and Baroque ) popular vertical urban dominants have many European cities have a historic skyline of spiers and domes. In such cities (such as Vienna, Prague, St. Petersburg, Dresden, Lübeck and Cologne ) the construction of tall buildings in the center is politically not a majority.

The leading high-rise city in Europe is the Russian capital Moscow with nine buildings above 200 meters in height, including four of the five tallest buildings on the continent ( Mercury City Tower, Capital City Moscow Tower, Naberezhnaya Tower C and Triumph- Palace ). Moscow has experienced in recent years a remarkable building boom since the financial crisis starting in 2007, however, some projects were halted, as the construction of the 612 meter high towers Russia. In November 2012, the 332 meter high Mercury City Tower, the Shard has replaced as the tallest building in Europe.

By 2004, Frankfurt was the leading high-rise city in Europe. In the German financial center there are five buildings above 200 meters in height, including the seventh - and ninth- tallest building on the continent ( the Commerzbank Tower and fair tower).

A leap forward has made in recent years the Spanish capital Madrid: four buildings over 200 meters were completed, including the tenth- and elfthöchsten building of the continent ( Torre Caja Madrid and Torre de Cristal).

The British capital London currently has three buildings above 200 meters. In July 2012, the 310 meters high, the Shard was inaugurated as the tallest building in Europe, but this record could hold only four months. In 2013, The Pinnacle will be completed with 288 meters height.

The following list shows only the buildings at over 200 meters above sea level; a complete list is the list of skyscrapers in Europe can be seen.

The listing is based on the structural level, that is, structures such as masts and tips include the official building height, if they are considered part of the building structure, but not when it comes to antennas, as these can be easily changed. Rules for the evaluation of tall buildings are set up and monitored by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Chicago. The data presented here are taken from the high-rise building database Emporis.
