Tom Osborne

Thomas William "Tom" Osborne ( born February 23, 1937 in Hastings, Nebraska) is an American politician. Between 2001 and 2007 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, he was a successful football player and coach.

Career

Tom Osborne attended Hastings High School and thereafter until 1959, the Hastings College. Then he studied until 1965 at the University of Nebraska. Between 1956 and 1962 he played as a wide receiver in the National Football League ( NFL) for the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers. From 1964 to 1997 he was a successful coach, with the team from the University of Nebraska, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, three times won the American college championship of the NCAA. Osborne is still a legend in the American Football scene and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999; the following year he received the Jim Thorpe named after Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award. Between 1960 and 1966 he was also a member of the National Guard of Nebraska.

Politically, Osborne was a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 2000, he was elected with 83 % of the vote in the third district of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Bill Barrett on January 3, 2001. After he was re-elected in subsequent years each, he could implement his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2007. In 2006, he opted not to run again for the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead, he applied within his party unsuccessfully for the nomination for the post of Governor of Nebraska; he was defeated in the Republican primary to incumbent Dave Heineman. Tom Osborne is married to Nancy Osborne. The couple lives in Lemoyne.
