2009 WTA Tour
The WTA Tour 2009 was the 36th year of the women's tennis tournament series, which is held annually by the Women 's Tennis Association.
The team competitions Hopman Cup and Fed Cup are like Grand Slams not organized by the WTA but the ITF. Here they are listed but because the top players play these tournaments usually.
Changes
For 2009, the WTA has made some changes in the tournament schedule:
- There are 30 countries in tournaments played ( 33 in 2008)
- There are 53 tournaments played ( 59 in 2008)
- Only the top 16 instead of the previous 17 tournaments will count towards the world rankings
- In addition to the Grand Slam tournaments, there are 4 " Premier Events " ( Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing)
- The U.S. Open was postponed by one week in order to create a 3- week break between Wimbledon and the start of the American hard court season can
