The marks were awarded until 1974 by the regional administrative authorities, from 1974 onwards, the regional Vehicle Registration Offices of the Ministry of Transport.

Each managing authority was originally allocated at least one source code.

1903 to the 1930s

During this time the flag had the format C NNNN NNNN or CC, where C or CC designates the source code and NNNN stands for a maximum four-digit number (without leading zeros).

From about 1932 two-letter codes origin, another distinctive letter was prefixed. The license plate had now the format XCC NNN, where X stands and NNN for a distinctive letters for a maximum of three -digit number. The distinctive letter was included in the counting sequence of the distinctive number so that, for example, is characterized AJF 999 indicator BJF followed 1.

The one-letter codes of origin were no longer awarded.

The 1950s and 1960s

Administrative authority whose allocation quota was exhausted, exchanged letters and numbers group, so that mark got NNN XCC.

In some authorities, these combinations were towards the end of the 1950s exhausted, so they used the scheme until the 1960s, which was from 1903 to the 1930s, however, the letters and numbers group were reversed here, eg 7842 N or 8401 AA.
