Winners and nominees in the Best Picture ( European Film ) since it was first awarded on 26 November 1988 at the Theatre of the West in West Berlin, Germany. The most frequently awarded with the main prize the feature film productions Italian directors (5 wins ), followed by their colleagues from the UK, Denmark, Germany and Austria ( 3 wins ) and Spain ( 2). With three victories are the most successful Italian Gianni Amelio, the Austrian Michael Haneke and the Dane Lars von Trier.

Victorious movies from German speaking countries were Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), Gegen die Wand (2004) and the later Oscar-winning drama The Lives of Others (2006 ), while the Austrian Michael Haneke in 2005 with the French-language production Caché and 2009 with The White Ribbon - A German children's story was successful.
