Fay (Somme)

Fay ( Picard: Fayin ) is a northern French village with 115 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region. The municipality belongs to the canton Chaulnes and is part of the Communauté de communes de Haute Picardie.

Geography

The community, whose name is derived from the Latin term FAGUM (beech ) is approximately 8.5 kilometers north of Chaulnes at the department road D164 in the Santerre. The road department in 1029 ( former Route nationale 29, part of the system of the Chaussée Brunehaut ) runs somewhat south of the township.

History

In 1324, Pierre de Fay is mentioned as a landowner.

During World War I the town was the center of the Battle of the Somme in the summer of 1916 and was completely destroyed in mine warfare. The reconstruction took place in small distance from the previous local situation, the ruins of which remain.
