Flag of Indiana

The flag of the U.S. state of Indiana was introduced in 1917

Shaping

The flag consists of a golden torch that represents liberty and enlightenment; the light rays represent their far-reaching influence.

The stars represent Indiana's place as the 19th state of the United States joined - the outer 13 stars represent the original 13 colonies, the 5 within the next 5 states and the individual, large star above the torch for Indiana.

History

The flag was introduced in 1917 by the General Assembly of Indiana, as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Indiana in 1916. The flag was the winner of a contest that was sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The design comes from Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana.
